This poverty and these riches, this abasement and glory, this dominion, power, and the like, upon which the eyes and hearts of these vain and foolish souls are set—all these things fade into utter nothingness in that Court! Even as He hath said: “O men! Ye are but paupers in need of God; but God is the Rich, the Self-Sufficing.”95 By “riches” therefore is meant independence of all else but God, and by “poverty” the lack of things that are of God.

Esta pobreza e esta riqueza, este aviltamento e esta glória, este domínio, poder e semelhantes, sobre os quais os olhos e corações destas almas vãs e loucas se focam – todas estas coisas se desvanecem num nada absoluto nesse Tribunal! Tal como Ele disse: “Ó homens! Sois apenas indigentes que precisam de Deus; mas Deus é o Rico, o que se basta a Si Próprio.”[95] Portanto, por “riquezas” pretende-se significar a independência de tudo salvo Deus, e por “pobreza” a carência de coisas que são de Deus.
