Know verily that Knowledge is of two kinds: Divine and Satanic. The one welleth out from the fountain of divine inspiration; the other is but a reflection of vain and obscure thoughts. The source of the former is God Himself; the motive-force of the latter the whisperings of selfish desire. The one is guided by the principle: “Fear ye God; God will teach you”;54 the other is but a confirmation of the truth: “Knowledge is the most grievous veil between man and his Creator.” The former bringeth forth the fruit of patience, of longing desire, of true understanding, and love; whilst the latter can yield naught but arrogance, vainglory and conceit. From the sayings of those Masters of holy utterance, Who have expounded the meaning of true knowledge, the odor of these dark teachings, which have obscured the world, can in no wise be detected. The tree of such teachings can yield no result except iniquity and rebellion, and beareth no fruit but hatred and envy. Its fruit is deadly poison; its shadow a consuming fire. How well hath it been said: “Cling unto the robe of the Desire of thy heart, and put thou away all shame; bid the worldly wise be gone, however great their name.”

Sabe, em verdade, que o Conhecimento é de dois tipos: Divino e Satânico. Um irrompe da fonte da inspiração divina; o outro é apenas um reflexo de pensamentos vãos e obscuros. A fonte do primeiro é o próprio Deus; a força motivadora do segundo são os sussurros do desejo egoísta. Um é guiado pelo princípio: “Temei a Deus; Deus guiar-vos-á” [54]; o outro é a confirmação da verdade: “O conhecimento é o véu mais doloroso entre o homem e o seu Criador”. O primeiro produz os frutos da paciência, do desejo ardente, da verdadeira compreensão, e do amor; enquanto o outro apenas consegue produzir arrogância, vanglória e presunção. Nos dizeres desses Mestres da Palavra sagrada, que expuseram o sentido do verdadeiro conhecimento, o odor desses ensinamentos tenebrosos que obscureceram o mundo, não se pode detectar de forma alguma. A árvore desses ensinamentos nada pode produzir salvo iniquidade e rebelião, e nenhum resultado pode gerar salvo ódio e inveja. O seu fruto é um veneno mortal; a sua sombra é um fogo devorador. Quão bem foi dito: “Segurai-vos à túnica do Desejo do vosso coração e ponde de lado toda a vergonha; ordena aos sábios mundanos que se afastem, por muito grande que seja o seu nome”.
