And when His day was ended, there came the turn of Moses. Armed with the rod of celestial dominion, adorned with the white hand of divine knowledge, and proceeding from the Párán of the love of God, and wielding the serpent of power and everlasting majesty, He shone forth from the Sinai of light upon the world. He summoned all the peoples and kindreds of the earth to the kingdom of eternity, and invited them to partake of the fruit of the tree of faithfulness. Surely you are aware of the fierce opposition of Pharaoh and his people, and of the stones of idle fancy which the hands of infidels cast upon that blessed Tree. So much so that Pharaoh and his people finally arose and exerted their utmost endeavor to extinguish with the waters of falsehood and denial the fire of that sacred Tree, oblivious of the truth that no earthly water can quench the flame of divine wisdom, nor mortal blasts extinguish the lamp of everlasting dominion. Nay, rather, such water cannot but intensify the burning of the flame, and such blasts cannot but ensure the preservation of the lamp, were ye to observe with the eye of discernment, and walk in the way of God’s holy will and pleasure. How well hath a believer of the kindred of Pharaoh, whose story is recounted by the All-Glorious in His Book revealed unto His beloved One, observed: “And a man of the family of Pharaoh who was a believer and concealed his faith said: ‘Will ye slay a man because he saith my Lord is God, when He hath already come to you with signs from your Lord? If he be a liar, on him will be his lie, but if he be a man of truth, part of what he threateneth will fall upon you. In truth God guideth not him who is a transgressor, a liar.’”9 Finally, so great was their iniquity that this selfsame believer was put to a shameful death. “The curse of God be upon the people of tyranny.”10

E quando o Seu dia terminou, veio a vez de Moisés. Armado com a vara [Ex: 4:1] da autoridade celestial, adornado com a mão branca [Ex 4:6] do conhecimento divino, e proveniente do Paran [Gen 21:21] do amor de Deus, empunhando a serpente [Ex 4:4] do poder e majestade eternas, brilhou no Sinai da Luz sobre o mundo. Convocou todos os povos e famílias da terra para o reino da eternidade, e convidou-os a partilhar o fruto da árvore da fidelidade. Sabes, certamente, da feroz oposição do Faraó e do seu povo, e das pedras de fantasias fúteis que as mãos dos infiéis lançaram sobre aquela Árvore abençoada. E de tal maneira que, por fim, o Faraó e o seu povo se levantaram e fizeram todos os esforços para extinguir, com as águas da falsidade e da negação, o fogo daquela Árvore sagrada [Ex 3:2], esquecidos da verdade que nenhuma água terrena pode extinguir a chama da sabedoria divina, nem nenhum sopro mortal pode apagar a lâmpada do domínio eterno. Não; essa água apenas pode intensificar [MO1]  a chama, e esses sopros apenas podem assegurar a preservação da lâmpada, se observasses com os olhos do discernimento e seguisses o caminho da santa vontade e prazer de Deus. Como bem observou um crente da família do Faraó, cuja história é relatada pelo Todo Glorioso no Seu Livro revelado ao Seu Bem-Amado: “E um homem da família do Faraó que era crente e ocultava a sua fé disse: «Mataríeis um homem porque ele disse que o meu Senhor é Deus, quando ele já veio a vós com sinais do vosso Senhor? Se ele é um mentiroso, que a sua mentira fique com ele; mas se ele é um homem da verdade, parte daquilo que ele ameaçou cairá sobre vós. Na verdade, Deus não guia quem é um transgressor, um mentiroso.”[9] Finalmente, tão grande foi a sua iniquidade que este mesmo crente foi vergonhosamente assassinado. “Que a maldição de Deus esteja sobre o povo da tirania”[10]

Later, the beauty of the countenance of the Friend of God8 appeared from behind the veil, and another standard of divine guidance was hoisted. He invited the people of the earth to the light of righteousness. The more passionately He exhorted them, the fiercer waxed the envy and waywardness of the people, except those who wholly detached themselves from all save God, and ascended on the wings of certainty to the station which God hath exalted beyond the comprehension of men. It is well known what a host of enemies besieged Him, until at last the fires of envy and rebellion were kindled against Him. And after the episode of the fire came to pass, He, the lamp of God amongst men, was, as recorded in all books and chronicles, expelled from His city.

Mais tarde, a beleza do semblante do Amigo de Deus [8] [Tiago 2:23] apareceu por detrás do véu, e foi içado mais um estandarte de orientação divina. Ele convidou o povo da terra para a luz da rectidão. Quanto mais apaixonadamente os exortava, maior era a ferocidade da inveja e da obstinação do povo, excepto aqueles que se desprendiam plenamente de tudo salvo Deus e ascendiam nas asas da certeza à condição que Deus exaltou acima da compreensão dos homens. É bem sabido que a hoste dos inimigos O cercou, até que, por fim, os fogos da inveja e da rebelião se acenderam contra Ele. Após terminar o episódio do fogo [Gen 22], Ele, a lâmpada de Deus entre os homens, conforme registam todos os livros e crónicas, foi expulso da Sua cidade [Gen 11:31].

And after Him there appeared from the Riḍván of the Eternal, the Invisible, the holy person of Ṣáliḥ, Who again summoned the people to the river of everlasting life. For over a hundred years He admonished them to hold fast unto the commandments of God and eschew that which is forbidden. His admonitions, however, yielded no fruit, and His pleading proved of no avail. Several times He retired and lived in seclusion. All this, although that eternal Beauty was summoning the people to no other than the city of God. Even as it is revealed: “And unto the tribe of Thamúd We sent their brother Ṣáliḥ. ‘O my people,’ said He, ‘Worship God, ye have none other God beside Him.…’ They made reply: ‘O Ṣáliḥ, our hopes were fixed on thee until now; forbiddest thou us to worship that which our fathers worshipped? Truly we misdoubt that whereunto thou callest us as suspicious.’”7 All this proved fruitless, until at last there went up a great cry, and all fell into utter perdition.

Depois d’Ele, vindo do Ridván do Eterno, o Invisível, apareceu a santa pessoa de Salé, que chamou novamente o povo para o rio da vida eterna. Durante mais de cem anos aconselhou-o a segurar-se firmemente aos mandamentos de Deus e a abster-se do que é proibido. As Suas advertências, porém, não produziram qualquer fruto, e as Suas súplicas de nada serviram. Várias vezes, Ele Se afastou e viveu em isolamento. Tudo isto, apesar daquela Beleza Eterna apenas estar a chamar o povo para a cidade de Deus[Sl 87:3; Sl 46:5]. Tal como foi revelado: “E à tribo de Tamude enviámos o seu irmão Salé. «Ó meu povo» disse Ele, «adorai a Deus, não tendes outro Deus senão Ele…» Eles responderam: «Ó Salé, até agora, as nossas esperanças estavam fixadas em vós; proibis que adoremos aquilo que os nossos pais adoravam? Verdadeiramente, consideramos suspeito aquilo a que apelas.” Tudo isto mostrou ser infrutífero, até que por fim entraram num grande pranto e caíram na maior perdição.

And after Noah the light of the countenance of Húd shone forth above the horizon of creation. For well-nigh seven hundred years, according to the sayings of men, He exhorted the people to turn their faces and draw nearer unto the Riḍván of the divine presence. What showers of afflictions rained upon Him, until at last His adjurations bore the fruit of increased rebelliousness, and His assiduous endeavors resulted in the willful blindness of His people. “And their unbelief shall only increase for the unbelievers their own perdition.”6

E depois de Noé, a luz do semblante de Húd brilhou sobre o horizonte da criação. Durante quase setecentos anos, de acordo com os relatos dos homens, Ele exortou o povo a voltar as suas faces e aproximar-se do Ridvan da presença divina. Quanta chuva de aflições caiu sobre Ele, até que as suas adjurações geraram o fruto da crescente rebeldia e os Seus esforços perseverantes resultaram na cegueira deliberada do Seu povo. “E a sua descrença apenas aumentará a própria perdição dos descrentes”[6]

And now, consider and reflect a moment upon the waywardness of this people. What could have been the reason for such denial and avoidance on their part? What could have induced them to refuse to put off the garment of denial, and to adorn themselves with the robe of acceptance? Moreover, what could have caused the nonfulfillment of the divine promise which led the seekers to reject that which they had accepted? Meditate profoundly, that the secret of things unseen may be revealed unto you, that you may inhale the sweetness of a spiritual and imperishable fragrance, and that you may acknowledge the truth that from time immemorial even unto eternity the Almighty hath tried, and will continue to try, His servants, so that light may be distinguished from darkness, truth from falsehood, right from wrong, guidance from error, happiness from misery, and roses from thorns. Even as He hath revealed: “Do men think when they say ‘We believe’ they shall be let alone and not be put to proof?”5

E agora considera e reflecte por um momento sobre a obstinação destas pessoas. Qual poderia ter sido a razão para tamanha negação e afastamento da sua parte? O que os poderia ter induzido a recusar despir o traje da negação e a adornarem-se com a túnica da aceitação? Além disso, o que poderia ter causado o não cumprimento da promessa divina que levou os pesquisadores a rejeitar aquilo que tinham aceitado? Medita profundamente, para que o segredo das coisas invisíveis se possa revelar a ti, para que possas inalar a doçura da fragrância espiritual imperecível, e que possas reconhecer a verdade que, desde tempos imemoriais até à eternidade, o Omnipotente testou, e continuará a testar, os Seus servos, para que se distinga a luz das trevas, o verdadeiro do falso, o bem do mal, a orientação do erro, a felicidade da miséria e as rosas dos espinhos. Tal como foi revelado: “Os homens pensam que dizem ‘Acreditamos’ e não serão incomodados e não serão postos à prova?”[5]

Among the Prophets was Noah. For nine hundred and fifty years He prayerfully exhorted His people and summoned them to the haven of security and peace. None, however, heeded His call. Each day they inflicted on His blessed person such pain and suffering that no one believed He could survive. How frequently they denied Him, how malevolently they hinted their suspicion against Him! Thus it hath been revealed: “And as often as a company of His people passed by Him, they derided Him. To them He said: ‘Though ye scoff at us now, we will scoff at you hereafter even as ye scoff at us. In the end ye shall know.’”3 Long afterward, He several times promised victory to His companions and fixed the hour thereof. But when the hour struck, the divine promise was not fulfilled. This caused a few among the small number of His followers to turn away from Him, and to this testify the records of the best-known books. These you must certainly have perused; if not, undoubtedly you will. Finally, as stated in books and traditions, there remained with Him only forty or seventy-two of His followers. At last from the depth of His being He cried aloud: “Lord! Leave not upon the land a single dweller from among the unbelievers.”4

Entre os Profetas estava Noé [Gn6:8]. Durante novecentos e cinquenta anos [Gn9:29], Ele exortou piedosamente o Seu povo e chamou-o para o abrigo da segurança e da paz. No entanto, ninguém prestou atenção ao Seu apelo. A cada dia infligiam sobre a Sua abençoada pessoa tamanha dor e sofrimento que ninguém acreditava que Ele pudesse sobreviver. Quão frequentemente o negaram, quão malevolamente levantaram suspeitas contra Ele! Assim foi revelado: “E sempre que uma comitiva do Seu povo passava perto d’Ele, escarneciam-No. Ele disse-lhes: ‘Apesar de agora escarneceres de nós, nós escarneceremos de vós, tal como o fazeis. No fim sabereis.’”[3] Muito tempo depois, Ele prometeu várias vezes a vitória aos Seus companheiros e fixou a hora da mesma. Mas quando a hora chegava, a promessa divina não se cumpria. Isto levou alguns entre o pequeno número dos Seus seguidores a afastarem-se d’Ele, e disto atestam os registos dos livros mais conhecidos. Isto deves ter certamente lido; se não, sem dúvida lerás. Por fim, conforme relatam os livros e as tradições, restavam com Ele apenas quarenta ou setenta e dois dos Seus seguidores. E finalmente, das profundezas do Seu ser, gritou bem alto: “Senhor! Não deixes sobre a terra um único habitante entre os descrentes” [4]

Should you acquaint yourself with the indignities heaped upon the Prophets of God, and apprehend the true causes of the objections voiced by their oppressors, you will surely appreciate the significance of their position. Moreover, the more closely you observe the denials of those who have opposed the Manifestations of the divine attributes, the firmer will be your faith in the Cause of God. Accordingly, a brief mention will be made in this Tablet of divers accounts relative to the Prophets of God, that they may demonstrate the truth that throughout all ages and centuries the Manifestations of power and glory have been subjected to such heinous cruelties that no pen dare describe them. Perchance this may enable a few to cease to be perturbed by the clamor and protestations of the divines and the foolish of this age, and cause them to strengthen their confidence and certainty.

Se te informares sobre as indignidades acumuladas sobre os Profetas de Deus e perceberes as verdadeiras causas das objecções pronunciadas pelos seus opressores, certamente apreciarás o significado da sua posição. Além disso, quanto mais de perto observares as negações daqueles que se opuseram aos Manifestantes dos atributos divinos [Lc13:34], mais firme será a tua fé na Causa de Deus. Assim, será feita uma breve menção nesta Epístola às diversas narrativas sobre os Profetas de Deus, para que estas possam demonstrar a verdade, que ao longo das eras e dos séculos, os Manifestantes do poder e da glória têm sido sujeitos a crueldades tão hediondas que nenhuma pena se atreve a descrevê-las. Talvez isto permita que alguns deixem de se perturbar pelo clamor e pelos protestos dos sacerdotes e dos loucos desta era, e fortaleça a sua confiança e a sua certeza.

In like manner, those words that have streamed forth from the source of power and descended from the heaven of glory are innumerable and beyond the ordinary comprehension of man. To them that are possessed of true understanding and insight the Súrah of Húd surely sufficeth. Ponder a while those holy words in your heart, and, with utter detachment, strive to grasp their meaning. Examine the wondrous behavior of the Prophets, and recall the defamations and denials uttered by the children of negation and falsehood, perchance you may cause the bird of the human heart to wing its flight away from the abodes of heedlessness and doubt unto the nest of faith and certainty, and drink deep from the pure waters of ancient wisdom, and partake of the fruit of the tree of divine knowledge. Such is the share of the pure in heart of the bread that hath descended from the realms of eternity and holiness.

De igual modo, aquelas palavras que fluíram da fonte do poder e desceram do céu da glória são incontáveis e estão além da compreensão comum do homem. Para os que possuem verdadeira compreensão e discernimento, a Sura de Hud é, certamente, suficiente. Pondera um momento no teu coração sobre aquelas palavras sagradas e, com desprendimento absoluto, esforça-te por alcançar o seu sentido. Examina o maravilhoso comportamento dos Profetas, e recorda as difamações e rejeições proferidas pelos filhos da negação e da falsidade, para que talvez consigas que o pássaro do coração humano voe das moradas da negligência e da dúvida para o ninho da fé e da certeza, e beba sofregamente das águas puras da sabedoria antiga, e partilhe do fruto da árvore[B] do antigo conhecimento divino. Para os puros de coração esse é o quinhão do pão[Lc22:19] que desceu dos domínios da eternidade e santidade.

Ponder for a moment, and reflect upon that which hath been the cause of such denial on the part of those who have searched with such earnestness and longing. Their attack hath been more fierce than tongue or pen can describe. Not one single Manifestation of Holiness hath appeared but He was afflicted by the denials, the repudiation, and the vehement opposition of the people around Him. Thus it hath been revealed: “O the misery of men! No Messenger cometh unto them but they laugh Him to scorn.”1 Again He saith: “Each nation hath plotted darkly against their Messenger to lay violent hold on Him, and disputed with vain words to invalidate the truth.”2

Pondera por um instante e reflecte sobre aquilo que tem sido a causa dessa negação por parte daqueles que procuraram com tanta seriedade e desejo. O seu ataque tem sido mais feroz do que alguma pena pode descrever. Nem um único Manifestante da Santidade apareceu sem que tenha sido atormentado pelas rejeições, repúdio e oposição veemente do povo ao Seu redor. Assim foi revelado: “Ó miséria dos homens! Nenhum Mensageiro veio a eles sem que O escarnecessem”[1] [Mat 13:57]. E Ele também afirmou: “Cada nação conspirou sombriamente contra o seu Mensageiro para O perseguir violentamente e discutiu com palavras vãs para refutar a verdade.” [2]

Consider the past. How many, both high and low, have, at all times, yearningly awaited the advent of the Manifestations of God in the sanctified persons of His chosen Ones. How often have they expected His coming, how frequently have they prayed that the breeze of divine mercy might blow, and the promised Beauty step forth from behind the veil of concealment, and be made manifest to all the world. And whensoever the portals of grace did open, and the clouds of divine bounty did rain upon mankind, and the light of the Unseen did shine above the horizon of celestial might, they all denied Him, and turned away from His face—the face of God Himself. Refer ye, to verify this truth, to that which hath been recorded in every sacred Book.

Considera o passado. Quão numerosos, tanto nobres como humildes, em todos os tempos, aguardaram ansiosamente o advento dos Manifestantes de Deus na pessoa santificada dos Seus Eleitos. Quantas vezes aguardaram a Sua chegada, quantas vezes oraram para que soprasse a brisa [Sl 147:18] da misericórdia divina, e surgisse a Beleza prometida por trás do véu da ocultação, e se manifestasse a todo o mundo. E sempre que os portais da graça se abriram e as nuvens da dádiva divina lançaram chuva sobre a humanidade, e a luz do Invisível brilhou no horizonte do poder celestial, todos eles O negaram e se afastaram do Seu rosto – o rosto do próprio Deus. Para verificar esta verdade, procura aquilo que foi registado em todo o Livro Sagrado.

The essence of these words is this: they that tread the path of faith, they that thirst for the wine of certitude, must cleanse themselves of all that is earthly—their ears from idle talk, their minds from vain imaginings, their hearts from worldly affections, their eyes from that which perisheth. They should put their trust in God, and, holding fast unto Him, follow in His way. Then will they be made worthy of the effulgent glories of the sun of divine knowledge and understanding, and become the recipients of a grace that is infinite and unseen, inasmuch as man can never hope to attain unto the knowledge of the All-Glorious, can never quaff from the stream of divine knowledge and wisdom, can never enter the abode of immortality, nor partake of the cup of divine nearness and favor, unless and until he ceases to regard the words and deeds of mortal men as a standard for the true understanding and recognition of God and His Prophets.

A essência destas palavras é esta: aqueles que percorrem o caminho da fé, aqueles que estão sequiosos pelo vinho da certeza, devem purificar-se de tudo o que é terreno – os seus ouvidos das conversas fúteis, as suas mentes das imaginações frívolas, os seus corações dos afectos mundanos, os seus olhos daquilo que perece. Devem colocar a sua confiança em Deus e, segurando-se firmemente a Ele, seguir o Seu caminho. Então tornar-se-ão dignos das glórias fulgurantes do sol do conhecimento e compreensão divinas e serão recipientes de uma graça que é infinita e invisível, pois o homem nunca pode esperar atingir o conhecimento do Todo-Glorioso, nunca poderá sorver do rio do conhecimento e sabedoria divinas, nunca poderá entrar na morada da imortalidade, nem partilhar o cálice da proximidade e favor divinos, a menos que deixe de considerar as palavras e actos dos homens mortais como padrão para a verdadeira compreensão e reconhecimento de Deus e dos Seus Profetas.
